This week, the Alzheimer’s Association 2013 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts & Figures were released. This annual report highlights important information on the current prevalence, future risk, mortality, the use and costs of health and long-term care, and caregiving. Key findings from this year’s report include:
- 1 in 3 seniors die with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.
- 70-year-olds with Alzheimer’s disease are more than twice as likely to die within a decade as a 70-year-old without Alzheimer’s.
- Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and the fifth leading cause of death in California.
- Dementia is the second largest contributor to death among older adults, behind only heart failure.
